Year 2

Here's the Curriculum Map for a short, but busy Summer 1 term. We'll be busy finding out about the history of flight and linking that with Julia Donaldson's Room on the Broom. The wind which brought the witch's hat down is what we'll be looking at in Science too, as well as other 'wild weather' features.

We hope you had a restful Half Term! This is what we will be doing in Spring 2 in Year 2 smiley

Welcome Back!

Here is what we will be looking at this term in Year 2!

Happy New Year-2022!

Thank you very much for all your kind presents, cards and messages. We hope that you had a very happy time over the Christmas holidays and it's lovely that all the children have come back to school with a very positive attitude to the year ahead.

Details of the curriculum this term will be uploaded ASAP and spellings and Home Learning will be starting again on Google Classrooms. GC is also a useful way for you to message us or do email the office if you have any worries or concerns and they will pass the message on to us.

Looking forward to chatting with you at the gate or in the playground.

Mrs Tate and Mrs Solomon.

Welcome Back to the second half of the Autumn Term Year 2 children and parents!

Just a few reminders:

Children will need to wear PE Uniform on a Monday and a Friday for their PE lesson.

Please see the Termly Curriculum Newsletter for more information about we will be learning this term.

September 2021
Welcome to Year 2!
The children have made a great start to Year 2 and we are delighted with the work that they have produced so far. It is a big step up but the children are already showing that they can work more independently, get themselves ready for learning and stay focussed on the task they’ve been given. They have discussed class rules and have come up with a thoughtful, kind and helpful set for us to follow.

Mrs Tate will be teaching on Mondays and Tuesdays, Mrs Solomon on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. We have a great team of TAs working with us-Mrs Pilmott, Mrs Clermont and Mrs Hogg.

This term we’ll be looking at Night and Day, linking in Science and English in particular. One of our class books is ‘Shine’ by Sarah Osuquo about a boy called  Kai who learns to be proud of himself and his unique qualities and values. Kai’s mother explains how although the moon and stars are different they both shine beautifully in the sky and we will be looking at how they shine too. Kai learns an important lesson: that everyone is special and valuable in their own way. He realises that the things that make him different are the things that make him special. He decides to use his qualities to shine his own light, helping others. This will be our focus for PSHE work and also RE, where we will be thinking about the school’s mission, how we can ‘live, love and learn like Jesus’, and also linking into some Green Missions to help planet Earth.
Other books this term will include ‘The owl who was afraid of the dark’ by Jill Tomlinson which has similar themes and scientific connections.
Your child will continue to bring home their Letters and Sounds reading book every day to share with you and you will have already been well trained to look at the tricky words and new vocabulary as well as helping children to sound out the words, building up to reading the whole book fluently over the week. Please could your child bring in their reading folder every day-the books will be changed every THURSDAY. As the year goes by, we hope that children will be able to choose their own books from the reading levels, giving them extra choice and responsibility. We are setting up our Guided Reading groups in class where children will read together each week with the teacher in small groups. Again, these will be Letters and Sounds books at the appropriate level, but they are different to the books that go home. Children will also work each week with one of our TAs on comprehension skills so that they learn to read for information and are able to answer questions about the text.

Teaching of phonics and spelling
A list of spellings for each week will be given out on THURSDAY following on from each week’s Letters and Sounds lessons. Your child will be tested in class on the following TUESDAY.
In class we will be following the White Rose Hub scheme for mathematics. The White Rose Hub scheme can be found at
Children  will also be given login details for an online maths system called Professor Assessor which will be used for Maths homework.
We so appreciate all help that you can give your child in helping them learn their Number Bonds to 20, 2x,5x and 10x tables and also in telling the time. Using an analogue clock, we will be working on telling the time to o’clock, ½ past, ¼ past and ¼ to this year. Some children will then be able to go on to understanding 5 minute intervals-5 past, 10 past etc, linking also to the digital time. Thank you in advance for all your help!
This term, our class PE lessons will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please remember to send your child to school in their PE ‘uniform’ on these days.
Everything else!
We follow a wide, creative curriculum and children will be taking part in music and art lessons, ICT and DT as well as following the Geography and History curriculum for Year 2. This term, the children will be looking at famous people who have let their light shine!
Home Learning
Home learning will continue to be set on Google classroom each week. Children will be given assignments in maths and spellings and there will be an additional enrichment activity. Home learning will be set on Fridays on Google classroom and should be handed in the following Thursday on Google Classroom. If your child is unable to access Google Classroom, please let us know so that we can provide them with a paper copy.
Water Bottles
Please ensure your child brings a named bottle to school every day, filled with water, not squash. The children are allowed to fill their water bottles up during the day if they run out. Please ensure water bottles are taken home regularly and washed. We have daily fruit snacks in the classroom.

Please help your child to take responsibility themselves for the things that they need to remember.  Perhaps your child could cut out the timetable and place it somewhere at home or in their school bag to remind them each day.

As a school we have been taking part in the English Hub Project. We follow the scheme 'Letters and Sounds' to teach phonics and we are using the 'Big Cats' reading scheme.

Below is the long term maths plan for this year. Please be aware that this may be adapted as teachers respond to the children's needs as the year progresses.
