Update 17th December 2020
Just a reminder that there are some wonderful videos of year 2 now on Google Classrooms. We have uploaded the KS1 nativity-Shine, Star, Shine and also our 'Strictly' dance, 'I love to boogie'.
Can we take this opportunity to thank you all for your kind gifts this Christmas? The whole year 2 team and Mrs Cawthorne were absolutely delighted with their gifts-it is so lovely that you thought to include everybody. We were also very excited to receive a delivery of delicious cakes and biscuits from the new local company, The Kindness Connection. Thank you also for some lovely individual gifts too- they are so much appreciated. We have such a lovely Year 2 team of adults and children and it has been a pleasure to celebrate together even in these challenging times.
Update 2nd November 2020. Autumn 2
Welcome back to school and we hope you had a good half term and enjoyed the Autumn colours.
As we enter a second period of lockdown, things will be different this time as schools remain open. We have planned a great term of work for year 2 which we detail below. In the event that your child needs to isolate, not because they're ill, but because of a family member with symptoms, then we have included plans for a fortnight's work which mirrors much of the work that we'll be doing at school so that they don't miss out on our class learning.
Our English work this term follows the exciting story 'Toys in Space' by Mini Grey. We'll be looking at plot and character and writing our own stories using simple sentences using capital letters and full stops. We will include different sentence types: statements, commands, questions and exclamations and will be adding exciting adjectives.
In Maths, we are continuing to look at 2-digit numbers, partitioning them into Tens and Units which is helpful for both addition and subtraction. We have started using Times Tables in our multiplication work and linking them to division too. We will have a week looking at telling the time-especially revising 1/2 past and introducing 1/4 past- and will also start to look at the different coins that we use in everyday life and 2D shapes.
Science work this term will be based on Light and Electricity as well as keeping an eye on the changing seasons. The children will be able to make circuits and find out about different light sources.
PE will continue to be on Tuesdays and Thursdays so children will need to come in sports kit on those days. Please note that the lesson on Thursday will be outside- weather permitting!
Mrs Sloan teaches Geography and History on Tuesdays and will be starting this term with the history of Remembrance Day.
Art and Music link into other areas of the curriculum so, for example, we will be composing firework music and making firework scratch pictures. One of our reading tasks will be learning about Guy Fawkes, connecting many areas of the curriculum to help the children's understanding of the world around them.
ICT will start with the Scratch programme of making algorithms for different activities and DT will include lighting up a lighthouse and making a card that moves with a lever.
We follow a timetable each week and suggest that you follow a similar timetable, like the one below, if learning at home. We have also included the links for our Maths scheme, White Rose Maths and the National Oak Academy English lessons that we suggest you use based on the story of Baba Yaga.
Welcome to Year 2!
We have been delighted to welcome our new class who have made a really pleasing start to the year. We have jumped straight in with Maths, English, Reading, Science, Art and Music-and that's only in Week 1! In addition, much of our work throughout the school has been based around a wonderful new book called 'Here We Are' by Oliver Jeffers which is exactly right for these unusual times.
Please could we remind you to make sure that all uniform and PE kit is named so we can return lost items. PE will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays this term and children will need to come in their PE kit on those days.
Reading books will be changed on Thursdays this term but please could you ensure that reading books are in school every day so that we can take as many opportunities as possible to hear children read-thank you! Home Learning, which includes spellings, will be sent home on Fridays and needs to be returned the following Thursday when our weekly spelling test will take place.
Thank you for delivering and collecting the children so promptly this week! It has been quite a challenge when parents have face masks AND sunglasses but we feel we're already getting to know you and look forward to meeting properly as soon as we can.
