The St. Patrick's approach to English
At St Patrick's we strongly believe in the value of a strong, challenging and engaging English curriculum and, as such, strive to make meaningful links between the different areas of learning.
One of our biggest aims is to ensure that as readers, writers and performers, children see the connections between them. The phrase we often use is READ AS A WRITER AND WRITE AS A READER.
Our philosophy for teaching children is based in promoting a passion for reading and embedding Talk for Writing principles throughout our English curriculum from Reception to Year 6.
Shared Writing: School Buddies
When children enter St Patrick's in Reception, our Year 5 children become their buddies; responsible role models to support and guide the youngest members of our school. These friendships then continue into Year 1, with both classes 'buddying up' regularly to play, read, write and work together.
This term Year 5/Reception and Year 6/Year 1 have buddied up to produce some shared writing based on stories that they have read together. See the photos below!
