Dear Parents and Children,

I hope that you have had an enjoyable holiday and are now refreshed and ready to start a new term at school in Year 6. We are looking forward to starting our new topics and hope that you are as excited as we are about our new learning. Mrs Wood will be teaching on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and Mrs Minty will be teaching on Mondays. Our class TA is Mrs Clermont

 

History Topic

This term our topic is Bath Blitz. We will be learning about the key events of WW2 and using map skills to locate countries. We will also learn about evacuation, rationing and land girls. During Black History month we will find out about Will Tull.

 

English

Our key text for this term is War Game by Michael Foreman

Our writing this term will be inspired by the book ‘Varmints' by Helen Ward. We will be writing setting descriptions, letters, newspaper reports, stories and explanation texts based on ideas from the book.

In History we will be writing diaries in character as an evacuee.

 

Reading

Your child will continue to bring home a reading book every day to share with you. 'Free Reading’ books may be chosen from the class library or from home. Please encourage your child to choose books that are a little challenging for them to read. Comics and easy books are also great to read as they can improve comprehension skills and give ideas for story writing, but they will not stretch their vocabulary and reading ability. Please encourage your child to read with expression, and to express opinions about the characters in the story, the plot, and what might happen next. Reading books and reading record should be brought to school each day.

 

Spellings

A list of spellings for each week will be given out after an initial spelling assessment has been undertaken. Your child will be tested in class on Thursday with the words listed and new spellings will be set on Friday. We encourage children to learn spellings using the Look, Cover, Write, Check method, following the sequence:

 

LOOK at the word

COVER the word

WRITE the word

CHECK their spelling against the word.

 Spellings will be set on Google Classroom. If your child is unable to access Google Classroom, please let us know so that we can provide them with a paper copy.

 

Maths

In maths, we follow the objectives set out in the National Curriculum and use other resources such as White Rose Maths and NCETM resources to supplement planning and aid pupils’ learning. More information about teaching for Mastery can be found at National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (ncetm.org.uk)

All pupils will be given login details for two online maths systems - Professor Assessor and TT Rockstars. Professor Assessor home learning assignments will be given for the children to complete on computers/tablets at home. Each child will get an assignment unique to them, to practise skills that have been taught in the numeracy lessons. In addition, the children will be able to practice their times tables on both Professor Assessor and TT Rockstars.

 

Science

Our topic this term is Healthy Bodies. We will learn about diet and healthy eating, the heart, muscles and the skeleton.

 

Art

In art we will be looking at Landscape Art. We will study perspective, foreshortening and a selection of artists who used these techniques.

 

PE

This term, our class PE lessons will be on Wednesday  with Mr Cross. Please remember to send your child to school in their PE kit on this day.

 

RE

In RE we will be learning about Mission and Vocation, Creation and Harvest and connections to other faiths

 

Home Learning

Home learning will continue to be set on Google classroom each week. Children will be given assignments in maths, spellings and reading comprehension with additional enrichment activities. Home learning will be set on Fridays on Google classroom and should be handed in the following Thursday on Google Classroom. If your child is unable to access Google Classroom, please let us know so that we can provide them with a paper copy.

 

Water Bottles

Please ensure your child brings a named bottle to school every day, filled with water. The children are allowed to fill their water bottles up during the day if they run out. Please ensure water bottles are taken home regularly and washed.

 

Timetable of things to remember!

Please help your child to take responsibility themselves for the things that they need to remember.  Perhaps your child could cut out the timetable and place it somewhere at home or in their school bag to remind them each day.
