Year 6

This term, our class will continue to build on our exciting learning journey. We’ll be finding out about the Tudors, exploring their impact on history and everyday life, and linking this to our upcoming trip to Hampton Court Palace. We’ll also be preparing for our class assembly, where we’ll share our knowledge and creativity with families. In our assembly , we will be sharing our learning about WWII and the Blitz. Children are welcome to wear clothing inspired by the World War II era.
PE lessons will take place on Fridays with Mrs Minty, and we will be swimming on Wednesdays.
If you are able to help by walking with us to swimming, please let Mrs Wood or Mrs Minty know.
English
In English, our writing will be inspired by The Last Alchemist by Colin Thompson, giving us opportunities to develop imaginative ideas, descriptive language, and thoughtful storytelling.
Home Learning In Year 6
Home learning will continue to be set on Google classroom each week. Children will be given assignments in maths, spellings and reading comprehension with additional enrichment activities. Home learning will be set on Fridays on Google classroom and should be handed in the following Thursday on Google Classroom. If your child is unable to access Google Classroom, please let us know so that we can provide them with a paper copy.
Spellings
Your child will be tested in class on Thursday with the words listed and new spellings will be set on Friday. We encourage children to learn spellings using the Look, Cover, Write, Check method, following the sequence:
LOOK at the word
COVER the word
WRITE the word
CHECK their spelling against the word.
Spellings will be set on Google Classroom. If your child is unable to access Google Classroom, please let us know so that we can provide them with a paper copy.
Reading
Your child will continue to bring home a reading book every day to share with you. 'Free Reading’ books may be chosen from the class library or from home. Please encourage your child to choose books that are a little challenging for them to read. Comics and easy books are also great to read as they can improve comprehension skills and give ideas for story writing, but they will not stretch their vocabulary and reading ability. Please encourage your child to read with expression, and to express opinions about the characters in the story, the plot, and what might happen next. Reading books and reading record should be brought to school each day.
Maths
All pupils have been given login details for an online maths system called Professor Assessor. Numeracy homework assignments will be given for the children to complete on computers/tablets at home. Each child will get an assignment unique to them, to practise skills that have been taught in the numeracy lessons. In addition, the children will be able to use the ‘Times Tables Fun’ system on their Professor Assessor login.
Water Bottles
Please ensure your child brings a named bottle to school every day, filled with water. The children are allowed to fill their water bottles up during the day if they run out. Please ensure water bottles are taken home regularly and washed.
Timetable of things to remember!
Please help your child to take responsibility themselves for the things that they need to remember. Perhaps your child could cut out the timetable and place it somewhere at home or in their school bag to remind them each day.
