Year 3
Welcome to Term 1 in Year 3!
We hope you have had an enjoyable and relaxing summer break!
This term we will be diving deeply into the Romans and the huge impacts they made on Britain. We would love to see any interesting books or resources you may have at home. Please do get in touch if you have an expertise and would like to share this with the class.
Our major PE focus this term is Swimming at Springfield Pool every Wednesday from the 10th September to the end of term. Thank you to the parent helpers who have offered to accompany us each week, we leave school at 12:30pm and return by 2:30pm. Children will need a packed lunch on Swimming day and come dressed in PE kit for easy changing. They will also need a comfortable backpack with swimsuit, towel, goggles (if needed), water bottle, raincoat and their Library card as we will visit Springfield Library if time permits.
Home Learning in Year 3
Home learning will continue to be set on Google classroom each week. Children will be given assignments in Maths, Spelling and reading comprehension with additional enrichment activities. Home learning will be set on Fridays on Google classroom and should be handed in the following Friday on Google Classroom or on paper if applicable. If your child is unable to access Google Classroom, please let us know so that we can provide them with a paper copy.
Spellings
A list of spellings for each week will be given out after an initial spelling assessment has been undertaken. Your child will be tested in class on Friday with the words listed and new spellings will then be set. We encourage children to learn spellings using the Look, Cover, Write, Check method, following the sequence:
LOOK at the word
COVER the word
WRITE the word
CHECK their spelling against the word.
Every child will be provided with a paper copy of their Spelling Look Cover Write Check sheet, this doubles up as Handwriting practice as well. Spelling sheets will also be uploaded to Google Classroom in case the sheet is lost.
Reading
Your child will continue to bring home a reading book every day to share with you. 'Free Reading’ books may be chosen from the class library or from home. Please encourage your child to choose books that are a little challenging for them to read. Comics and easy books are also great to read as they can improve comprehension skills and give ideas for story writing, but they will not stretch their vocabulary and reading ability. Please encourage your child to read with expression, and to express opinions about the characters in the story, the plot, and what might happen next. Use the VIPERS bookmark to help discuss books with your children. Reading books and reading record should be brought to school each day. Children receive house points for regular home reading.
Maths
All pupils will be given login details for an online maths system called Professor Assessor. Some Numeracy homework assignments will be given for the children to complete on computers/tablets at home. Each child will get an assignment unique to them, to practise skills that have been taught in the numeracy lessons. In addition, the children will be able to use the ‘Times Tables Fun’ system on their Professor Assessor login.
Other Numeracy tasks may be given which do not require internet access.
Water Bottles
Please ensure your child brings a named bottle to school every day, filled with water. The children can fill their water bottles up during the day if they run out. Please ensure water bottles are taken home regularly and washed.
Timetable of things to remember!
Please help your child to take responsibility themselves for the things that they need to remember. Perhaps your child could cut out the timetable and place it somewhere at home or in their school bag to remind them each day.
