Year 1

Welcome to Term Six in Year One.

We hope you had a lovely break and were able to relax and catch up with loved ones (even with the hot sun).

Our next class book is a wonderful story called 'The Dragon Machine', there are some great vocabulary opportunities within this book.  Maths this term will include place value to 100, identifying 10’s and 1’s in numbers. Also, we will be doing some practical work weighing and measuring.  In Geography we will be exploring different parts of the world. Thinking about some hot areas near the equator and cold places in the polar regions. Science will link with Geography as we will be exploring different habitats around the world and identifying the animals that live there. In music we will be learning to play the chime bars as an accompaniment to some fun songs as well as participating in Feel Good Fridays with Rock Steady.

Mrs Sykes will be teaching in class on Monday and Tuesday. Mrs Cawthorne will be in class teaching on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We have some fantastic teaching assistants, Mrs Smith (Monday and Wednesday), Mrs Couchman (Tuesday, Thursday and Friday). The children will work with Mr Cross and Mrs Cawthorne for their PE sessions on Wednesday and Thursday.

Home Learning in Year One

Home learning will continue to be set on Google classroom each week. Children will be given assignments in maths, phonics and word understanding. Home learning will be set on Thursdays on Google classroom and should be handed by the following Wednesday on Google Classroom. If your child is unable to access Google Classroom, please let us know so that we can provide them with a paper copy.

Reading

The reading book will be sent home each night, we ask that you read it at home at least 4 times across the week (this could be part of the book or the whole book). Remember that we don't want this to replace all reading, trips to the library, books off of the shelf and favourite rereads are all incredibly important when building reading skills. Children love to hear their loved ones reading to them! Reading with your child is so important to prepare them to succeed as a reader.  We ask that you bring the book to school each day. Books will be changed on a Monday ready for the week.

Why do we ask you to reread the books with your child?

We want the children to become confident and fluent readers. By reading the book more than once, children have the opportunity to build on different skills with each read. Often with the first read, children are decoding, reading tricky words and taking in the main events of the story. We also want the children to develop other reading skills...

develop an understanding of vocabulary in the book.

Link what they read and hear to their own experiences.

Become familiar with the story. Being able to sequence, discuss and answer questions.

Recognise predictable patterns.

Make a prediction.

Checking that the text makes sense by re-reading.

Make inferences based on what is being said, done and from the illustration.

Clear understanding of the text.

Expressing their opinion of what they are reading.

There are lots of skills to build on and by supporting fluent readers, children are more confident to build on these complex skills!

Maths

All pupils will be given login details for an online maths system called Professor Assessor. Numeracy homework assignments will be given for the children to complete on computers/tablets at home. Each child will get a home learning task once a fortnight. (One week will be phonics and one week will be maths). In addition, the children will be able to use the ‘Times Tables Fun’ system on their Professor Assessor login.

Water Bottles

Please ensure your child brings a named bottle to school every day, filled with water. The children are allowed to fill their water bottles up during the day if they run out. Please ensure water bottles are taken home regularly and washed.
